ABOUT THE ARTIST

Mike's Bio

Working for nearly two decades as a professional artist, Mike Raabe has had his work utilized in collector card games, comic books, board games, role-playing games, commercial advertising, storyboard work for television animation, and in various publications.

He was the co-creator/co-publisher of the monthly Chrome Tiger Press comic, Menagerie, illustrating its flagship series, Scarycat & Mousekanaut (1987-1988). From 1987 to 1993 his experience covered the majority of graphic jobs in comics, working most often as a penciler, inker, cover artist, and colorist, primarily working with MU Press after 1989.

It wasn't until 1993 that Mike felt he could get his business license and make illustrating his fulltime career. The newly created collector card game market, along with a contract from Wizards of the Coast, had much to do with his decision. The past eleven years have since seen well over three hundred paintings produced by Mike, for thirteen different collector card games.

From 1995 to 1996, in addition to his painting work, he did storyboard production work for animated television shows, working for companies like Disney, Film Roman, and Universal Cartoon Studio.

1997 saw the unique opportunity to work on the immersion CD-ROM text adventure, King of Dragon Pass. Mike produced fifty paintings for the history portions of the game, which was based in the Hero Wars universe. The game went on to receive the Best Visual Art award from the Glorantha 2000 awards, Best Visual Arts award from the 2nd Annual Independent Games Festival (2000), along with being nominated for an Origins Award (2000).

The following year offered another unique opportunity, where he created forty-two character illustrations for the very popular card game, Guillotine.

Other work includes the cover painting and character race illustrations for the World Tree role-playing game source book (2000), along with illustrations done for short stories by writer M. C. A. Hogarth (2000, 2003), appearing in publications from Cornwuff Press and Sofawolf Press. The cover art for the World Tree source book was subsequently nominated for the Best Anthropomorphic Published Illustration for 2001, at the Ursa Major awards.

Mike also does a considerable amount of advertising work and often acts as a project developer, designer, and consultant. To top it all off, he is currently working as art director and illustrator for the Wattsalpoag game company.

Mike currently lives in Bellevue, Washington, just across the lake from Seattle, with his beautiful wife and two cats.
